The SCCAR roll limitation system was first demonstrated on the Activa 2 prototype at the 1990 Paris Motor Show.
The system has been fine-tuned to enable the Xantia Activa to corner on the level, thus improving safety and increasing driving pleasure. When the system detects a curve, the on-board computer immediately increases roll stiffness. If the curve continues and the passenger cabin tilts to an angle of0.3 deg, two hydraulic jacks kick in to help restore the vehicle’s balance. Roll has been eliminated.
The art of flat cornering
The action of cornering can be broken down into several phases: a straight-line approach followed by a gradual movement of the steering wheel that increases as the angle becomes tighter followed lastly by a straightening of the wheel as the car moves out of the bend. During the first phase, any discomfort to passengers caused by surface imperfections is eliminated by an anti-roll sphere.
